El objetivo principal de la custodia ha sido evitar presiones sobre esta valiosa cavidad, aplicando el principio de cautela ambiental hasta sus últimas consecuencias para la protección, conservación, gestión y recuperación del medio kárstico, los recursos hídricos subterráneos y la cobertera superior a la cavidad, y a la par realizar unos estudios preliminares, para llegar al conocimiento del estado actual y del escenario ideal y preciso de las medidas óptimas para la conservación de la cavidad y de los valores que alberga. Sólo se puede proteger bien lo que bien se conoce.
En concreto, las actuaciones ejecutadas han sido:
* Custodia del territorio, con el objetivo principal de aplicar el principio de cautela ambiental en los terrenos superficiales que directamente afectan o pueden afectar a la cavidad. No se realiza sobre la cavidad en sí misma, dado que, según entendemos, la titularidad no alcanza hasta el subsuelo. Además, se ha procedido a:
- Cerramiento de la cavidad
- Regulación del régimen de visitas
- Balizamiento en zonas sensibles
* Estudios preliminares del sistema, cuenca y karst, que han sido:
- Exploración completa de la cavidad y del sistema kárstico.
- Instalación de una red de monitorización climática y aguas.
Con ello se ha realizado un trabajo holístico y multidisciplinar de la cavidad en sí misma y en su contexto, integrada en una cuenca y en un karst: los valores geológicos, hidrológicos, culturales, biológicos, espeleológicos…
Ya veremos por donde nos conduce esta institución. Por el momento, puede afirmarse que esta iniciativa implica un gran avance, pues abre la puerta a la participación de los espeleólogos en la gestión activa de nuestro patrimonio subterráneo, y sienta las bases para la reproducción de este experimento en otras cavidades.
